They’re also popular in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Crackers were invented by London confectioner and baker Tom Smith in 1847.
But it turns out there’s a technique that can increase your chances of winning the prize, joke and all-important Christmas hat.
Defence experts from QinetiQ have shared four essential tips with the Telegraph.
1. Positioning
It’s best to hold the cracker lower than the other person.
So, keep the cracker tilted downwards as you pull towards you.
2. Grip
Be sure to have a nice firm hold of the cracker to prevent tearing.
A two-handed grip is better – if you’re allowing it, of course.
3. Speed
Don’t go in with a fast tug as this is more likely to ruin your side of the cracker, not the other person’s.
Keep your pull slow and steady.
4. Avoid twists
Twisting the cracker won’t work in your favour either.
This will just destroy your end.
