‘You can’t control these things’: Delta Goodrem opens up about her health ‘fight’

Delta Goodrem has opened up about her cancer fight, two decades on from first learning her diagnosis.

The Aussie singer chatted on Today Extra ahead of her 20th anniversary tour for her record-breaking debut album, Innocent Eyes.

Goodrem was never able to tour the album when it was first released in 2003, after being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 18.

“It was incredibly extreme to start to have your dreams come true… then obviously my trajectory changed,” she revealed. “We were number one and I got diagnosed with cancer, that’s life. That’s my story now.”

The Lost Without You singer started her own foundation to help support others diagnosed with the same illness.

“You just have to do the best you can, making good with what comes your way,” she said on Today Extra. “I’ve now been able to not have a wall between me and people that are going through a fight, and hopefully now we make a big difference with the foundation.”

“We’ve done incredible things these past few years, and we’ve got so much more that we intend to do.”

Today marks the release of her new song, Back To Your Heart, which she says was born out of the love of wanting to share new music and celebrate with her fans.

“On the last record I really wanted to go back to writing on the piano, having lyrics that were really autobiographical,” she shared. “Then after touring so much, being back on the road and doing live performances, we went back to going ‘I just want to sing along with the crowd, and have fun’.”

“No album and no song comes about the same,” she said of her music-making process, “because you’re not the same as you were a few years ago. You’re evolving, you’re moving, you’re forever learning.”

Goodrem is in the midst of touring her music through Europe and the UK, while also preparing for some very special shows Down Under.

The Innocent Eyes 20th Anniversary tour will see the singer sing every song of her debut album, track by track. Some of the songs she’s never sung live before, which she says has been exciting to navigate. ”Going back to those old versions, and seeing how they’ve evolved during live performances, has been a real challenge,” she revealed.

The album spent an unprecedented 29 weeks at number one on the ARIA Charts in 2003, making it the highest-selling debut album in Australian history.
