Escobar looked to perform a suicide dive on Mysterio outside the ring.
But the stunt went wrong, with Mysterio appearing to hit his head on the canvas.
The broadcast subsequently cut to an ad break.
And as coverage returned, Mysterio could be seen being attended to by a doctor, with the battle then waved off by referee Jessika Carr.
It was initially suggested that the injury may have been staged and part of a storyline.
But wrestling reporter Sean Ross Sapp has confirmed that this was not the case.
He tweeted: “After speaking with additional sources, we’ve learned the Mysterio injury was not storyline as originally suggested.
“Santos Escobar was scheduled to go over clean and there was to be a backstage segment follow up that got nixed.”
The duo had been battling for the right to take on Austin Theory for the United States Championship.
Theory, who was in attendance at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, will now take on Escobar in a fortnight.
Following the botched match, Escobar hugged his mentor Mysterio and wished him well.
And fans also wished Mysterio well.
One wrote: “Prayers for Rey Mysterio man.”
A second tweeted: “Wish Him A Speedy Recovery.”
Another added: “Damn Prayers to Rey.”
