Why Wrexham star hopes ‘lights go out and they can’t finish FA Cup final’ as he nervously watches on at Wembley

WREXHAM star Paul Mullin said he hopes the lights go out at Wembley Stadium and the FA Cup final cannot be finished.

Manchester United meet Manchester City in the showpiece on Saturday afternoon.

Mullin fired the Wrexham to League Two after winning the National League title this season.

And the Welsh side enjoyed a good run in the FA Cup too before they were beaten by Sheffield United in a fourth round replay.

With his eight goals in five matches during the competition, Mullin will win the FA Cup Golden Boot and he is in attendance at Wembley to collect his award.

But Mullin is a boyhood Liverpool fan and can’t choose who he would rather win the derby final.

Mullin joked with talkSPORT: “Today, it is not the occasion I wanted with two Manchester clubs and supporting Liverpool but it will be good to see [Erling] Haaland and Co.

“I don’t really want either team to win, to be honest.

“I hope it goes to penalties and the lights go out and they can’t finish the game.

“That would be the ideal scenario. But I am a Liverpool fan, loved it this time last year when Liverpool were here.

“It is still going to be an unbelievable occasion and to watch these players, who are unbelievable up close, is something to look forward to.”

Riyad Mahrez needs to score four goals to catch Mullin’s eight in the cup and on his likely Golden Boot-winning performance, he said: “It is unbelievable.

“It is something I am really proud of. When my little boy grows up… to be able to show that his dad was able to win something I’d look back on my career and be really proud of.

“It is the cherry on top, the focus all season has been to get promoted.

“I knew going into the game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane that if I got a goal I’d have a good chance of winning this also.

“When that happened, it was something that after the promotion I could look back on and give me a really good end to a good year.”
