But aged 41, and with injury problems piling up, Federer has chosen to retire, with his final match coming later this month.

“My body’s message to me lately has been clear,” Federer said.

“I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career.

“To the game of tennis, I love you and will never leave you.”

Who has won most men’s tennis Grand Slams? Nadal, Djokovic and Federer top list

When is Roger Federer’s last match and who will he play?

The tennis legend has had a major knee injury to contend with over the past three years, and he hasn’t played a competitive game since being knocked out of Wimbledon in 2021.

Finishing his career with 20 Slams, only Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have more, with 21 and 22 each respectively.

Federer has since confirmed that his final tournament and subsequent match will be at the Laver Cup later this week.

“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event,” he announced.

“I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour.”

Federer will team up with career rival Rafael Nadal to take on Americans Francis Tiafoe and Jack Sock in a men’s doubles clash.

The match will get going from 9pm UK time on Friday, September 23.
