His most famous moment came in the 2003 World Cup final against Australia when he scored the winning kick for England.
The game had headed into overtime following a dramatic 80 minutes, with the Australian team fighting hard to hold off a late English rally.
But it was the boot of England’s No10 which would decided the match and the championship, with Wilkinson floating over a perfect drop-goal to the delight of fans back home and on the terraces.
Despite hanging up his boots in 2014, Wilkinson’s money making career has showed no signs of slowing down.
In a statement about his decision to retire, the rugby hero said at the time: “I would like to take this opportunity to formally announce my retirement from playing rugby.
“It goes without saying that I have an enormous number of people to thank for their support from all around the world but especially here in France and in England.
“This however is not at all the time to be concentrating on this as I would like to focus all my attention and energy on the team and these final two games of the season.
“I sincerely thank you all for everything you have given me and for making these last 17 years something I will never forget.”
Like a lot of former sports stars, after he retired Wilkinson turned his attention to becoming a pundit, and has worked for both for Sky Sports and ITV.
As well as his media work, the former pro has written five books – which includes the bestseller Jonny: My Autobiography, which was released in 2011.
Not stopping their Wilkinson also launched an online men’s fashion label called Fineside with the primary aim of providing quality British streetwear to customers across the country.
Because of all of this, his total net worth is reportedly as high as £16M.
How much did Jonny Wilkinson make a year as a rugby player?
It’s a well known fact that rugby players do not get the over-the-top salaries that footballers get,
However, Wilkinson was one of the luckier ones, and took home a HUGE pay packet during his career.
During his final year of playing rugby, he headed to France to play for the team Toulon.
Whilst there he did very nicely, and in 2013 earned £48,155 per month – which was £577,860 a year.
As of 2023, Wilkinson still works for ITV, covering high profile rugby games for them.
Speaking about his career now, he told Champions Speakers: “Even though I’m retired now, I’m experiencing the best parts of my career every day.
“As I explore the boundaries of who I am, and I look back at what I went through, it starts to mean more now than it did at the time.
“At the time, it was just about winning, being ‘someone’ and being a success, and therefore if you asked me that question before, I probably would have said, ‘oh, just lifting a trophy, winning a World Cup’.
“But as I get older and start to remove those boundaries of who I am, I see things more fully.
“And now, when I look back at my rugby career, I realise that it was just an incredible experience of learning.”
