What does ‘session expired’ mean on Facebook? Error message explained

FACEBOOK users have been left baffled after they were logged out of their accounts with nothing but a “session expired” message.

And they’re blocked from logging back in.

Meta says it is investigating the problem

Facebook down updates — Meta platform hit with global outage as thousands of users also report Instagram issues

What is ‘session expired’ on Facebook?

The message randomly appeared to most users on Tuesday afternoon amid a major outage that’s also affected Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

When a session expires it normally means that the connection between a person and a website has been terminated.

This is sometimes done as a security precaution, a bit like when your laptop locks when you’ve not used it for a prolonged period of time.

But as this has happened to all Facebook users simultaneously and they’re not able to log back in there appears to be a much wider issue with Meta’s account system.

Why is my Facebook unable to log in?

When people attempt to regain access, another message appears telling users they are “unable to log in”

“An unexpected error occurred,” it reads.

“Please try logging in again.”

However, when you try to log in again you’re still blocked from getting back on Facebook.

It’s not yet clear why this is happening but you’re not the only one.

Has my Facebook been hacked?

There’s no indication that the current outage means you’ve been hacked.

Hundreds of thousands of people across the globe have reported the same issue and it’s part of a major outage.

Facebook owner Meta said it was suffering from “major disruptions”.

“We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login,” the company siad.

“Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
