‘Well that sucks’ Android fans yell as Microsoft kills major app perk for millions of devices

PC owners are gutted as Microsoft is killing off a feature that allows them to use Android apps on their machines.

It’s less than three years since the computing giant announced that Windows 11 would allow users to install Android apps on their PCs.

The Windows Subsystem for Android allowed apps from Amazon’s Appstore, such as TikTok.

As of today, Windows 11 users can no longer search for Amazon Appstore or associated Android apps from the Microsoft Store.

What? I actually use this every week

Apps already installed will continue to work for now.

But in a year’s time they’ll be pulled, on March 5, 2025 to be exact.

It’s not clear why Microsoft has decided to pull support.

But Amazon appeared to lay blame on Microsoft, saying: “Because Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 will no longer be supported after March 5, 2025.

“Amazon and Microsoft are partnering to create a smooth end of support experience for developers and customers of Amazon Appstore on Windows 11.”

The company continued: “Starting on March 6, 2024, Windows 11 customers will not be able to search for Amazon Appstore or associated apps from the Microsoft Store.

“Customers may continue using Amazon Appstore apps that they previously installed and will still be able to receive app updates.”

Users have largely reacted to the announcement with surprise and shock.

“This feature came and went record breaking fast,” one person wrote on Reddit.

“Disappointing because I was hoping to get to use it whenever I bought my next Windows computer.”

Another commented: “Well that sucks.

“It’s been a great addition to my Surface Pro.

“Turns it into both a Windows and Android tablet with the apps running side by side.”

A third added: “What? I actually use this every week.”
