‘We made it for you’: Margot Robbie’s heartfelt Golden Globes speech after Barbie wins inaugural award

Margot Robbie had reason to dance the night away after Barbie’s stellar success at the 2024 Golden Globes.

Barbie took home the first-ever Golden Globe Award for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, beating out Taylor Swift‘s The Eras Tour concert film.

The film’s producer and magenta-clad lead, Margot Robbie, accepted the honour along with the cast and director Greta Gerwig with a heartfelt speech.

The Aussie star began by dedicating the win to “every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth: the movie theatres.”

Gerwig then chimed in to thank “all the Barbies and Kens in front of and behind the screen.”

“It was the greatest, most joyful show of craftsmanship and passion I’ve ever seen,” she added.

Robbie also thanked the “brave individuals at Barbie and Mattel” for taking an “extraordinary risk” in greenlighting the film and “standing by it every step of the way.”

The Barbie star hilariously thanked her co-star Ryan Reynolds for going “full beach”, referencing his character Ken’s comedic ‘job’ in the film.

Gerwig then gave a special shoutout to actress America Ferrera “for showing her soul.” 

“Last but not least, thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans,” Robbie concluded the heartwarming speech.

“This is a movie about Barbie but it’s also a movie about humans,” she added.

“It’s about you. We made it for you, and we made it with love, and thank you for loving it back.”

Aussie darling Robbie kicked off the 2024 awards season with a stunning red carpet look to pay homage to Barbie.

The actress continued with her Barbie-inspired looks by replicating an outfit worn by the iconic doll in 1977 with $3 million (approx. A$4,463,355) worth of Lorraine Schwartz Jewellery.

Barbie wins at the Golden Globes

Along with the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, Barbie took home a second Golden Globe for the night.

The blockbuster hit won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture for the ballad track, What Was I Made For? by duo Billie Eilish and Finneas.

The film was notably nominated three times in the category, also earning a nomination for Dua Lipa’s catchy pop hit, Dance the Night and Reynold’s ballad, I’m Just Ken, by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.

Barbie strikes out in other categories

Barbie took home an impressive two Golden Globe Awards for the 81st award ceremony.

Heading into the night, the film racked up a whopping nine nominations across the categories, including the best actor and actress awards for Robbie and Reynolds respectively.

Aussie starlet Robbie received a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her titular role as the signature blonde doll. The award ended up going to Emma Stone.

Reynolds similarly missed out on the Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture to Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer.

The friendly Barbenheimer competition continued throughout the night as Greta Gerwig also missed out on the Best Director – Motion Picture to Christopher Nolan.

Barbie additionally scored a nomination for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, which ultimately went to Anatomy of a Fall.

Finally, Poor Things beat Barbie for the coveted Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award.
