Wayne Rooney snaps up Premier League star in shock loan move weeks after transfer window slammed shut

LEWIS O’BRIEN has completed a loan move to D.C. United with a glowing reference from his Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

The 24-year-old Forest midfielder was gutted when his original loan move to Blackburn Rovers fell through at the 11th hour due to a row over the timing of vital paperwork arriving with the EFL.

Rovers were so incensed they appealed the case but lost, leaving O’Brien in limbo as Forest had used all available places in their Premier League squad.

The midfielder, however, has now moved to the MLS with Wayne Rooney’s DC United on loan until July 16.

O’Brien joined The Reds from Huddersfield Town in July and has since made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring once.

Cooper said: “Lewis deserves this opportunity to go and play football.

“Everyone knows about his situation, so now he is able to go and get some games under his belt between now and the end of the season which will be a real positive for Lewis.

“It will be a great experience and we wish him well.”

Roo is buzzing with the arrival of O’Brien’s and believes he’ll be a solid creative addition to his squad:

The Manchester United legend said: “Lewis has been one of the best players in the Championship over the last few seasons.

“He reads the game well and creates goal-scoring opportunities.

“Bringing him in on loan from Nottingham Forest was a great bit of business for us and he will be a brilliant addition to our midfield.”

DC United were able to snap up O’Brien as the MLS transfer window is open from January 31 until April 24.

The Black-and-Red will be back in action on Saturday, welcoming New England Revolution to the Audi Field.
