THIS is the moment a driver uses the controversial slingshot roundabout trick in an attempt to beat the traffic – but not everyone is convinced.
The TikTok user known online as ‘Techamelia’ took to her social media page to show just what the supposedly time-saving trick actually involved.
Amelia drives down the outside lane in an attempt to beat the trafficTikTok/Techamelia..
As she approaches the roundabout a white van can be seen in the left lane while the road markings indicate the right lane is just for turning rightTikTok/Techamelia..
In a post captioned “Using JobberTok’s roundabout slingshot trick” Amelia added the note: “At this roundabout in Alloa the overtaking lane turns into the right turn lane and I sometimes forget but actually I get through way faster because everyone slows down far too early in the left lane.
“I worked out it’s actually faster to do a roundabout slingshot.”
In the split screen footage, Amelia can be seen driving down the right-hand lane, with the road markings indicating it is for those turning right up ahead.
Meanwhile, in the left-hand lane, cars either turning left or going straight on can be seen braking as they approach the roundabout.
Amelia can then be seen driving right around the roundabout and then indicating to turn left at the exit.
The post which is just four days old has already become something of an attraction on the site, having been viewed more than 7,800 times and picking up 182 likes.
However, many of the commentators were not convinced the woman had actually saved any time.
One person wrote: “That actually took you longer. What was the point?”
The same person then wrote in another post: “When you pull up there’s one white van in the left lane.
“When you get back round that white van is long gone because you’d have been quicker behind it.”
While another commentator added: “Yes it works… sometimes. This was pointless.”
A third person said: “You’re the type of person that makes my commute longer, such ignorance.”
While the slingshot often provokes fury from other motorists, there is actually nothing in the Highway Code to prevent it as long as you drive safely.
However, some road law experts are not certain the hack is within the rules.
Guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service says that “misusing lanes to gain an advantage over other drivers” can be counted as “careless or inconsiderate driving”.
Elsewhere, footage posted on the same social media site by @jobbertok shows a driver using the technique to avoid a queue of cars at Rotary Way roundabout in the Newcastle area.
The Jobbertok account shares videos in an attempt to help drivers understand little-known rules of the road.
In October, another TikTok user known as ‘Pedal Perspective’ posted a clip seemingly filmed in London of a driver performing the controversial manoeuvre.
There have been other examples of motorists using a “roundabout slingshot” trick to avoid morning traffic.
Meanwhile, an EV expert has explained four reasons why vehicle owners actually prefer petrol motors.
