Fergie was all for big decisions being reviewed and he was way ahead of his time in coming up with the ideal VAR system.

But the key thing for the legendary manager was the time it would take for VAR decisions to be made, with Ferguson suggesting a time limit of 30 seconds.

Asked if VAR should be brought in, Ferguson said: “My contention about it in the past is that it would take too long, it’s a winter game, and people on the terraces are sitting waiting for something to happen and it could take a couple of minutes (for VAR to make a decision).

“If you can’t make a decision in 30 seconds, the game carries on.

“30 seconds in a lot of cases is the amount of time you take for a goal kick, or a corner, so it wouldn’t kill the game in terms of wasting time.

“For all decisions. It sounds sensible. You could start off with goalline incidents and see how it impacts the game – a start is always important.”

Fans were impressed with Ferguson’s foresight and praised his idea of a VAR time limit.

One reacted saying: “The GOAT called it in 2005!”

Another added: “I’ve said it a few times. A time limit to VAR would solve a lot of problems.

“Either something will be obvious and won’t be caught in the time limit, exposing the quality of officials, OR we’ll see only the most obvious things checked limiting VAR overreach.”
