He is best known for writing a series of books set in the 1930s to the 1950s about veterinary practice, animals, and their owners, which began with If Only They Could Talk, first published in 1970.

The books went on to sell 60 million copies and sparked a film and 90-episode BBC TV show, All Creatures Great and Small, which starred Christopher Timothy.

“If a farmer calls me with a sick animal, he couldn’t care less if I were George Bernard Shaw,” he once said of his writing.

Alf died of prostate cancer in 1995, aged 78 and owned the car between his retirement and his death in Thirsk, North Yorks.

Described as “highly collectable”, the hatchback has just over 30,000 miles on the clock and was sold by auctioneers Tennants for £22,000 on July 15 as part of their summer transport sale.

This Peugeot 205 was first registered in August 1990 – and comes with a new front bumper.

A spokeswoman for the auctioneers said the lot had attracted “keen bidders.”

Other lots to sell included an Original Shell Opaque Glass Petrol Pump Globe, which sold for £600, and a rare 1906 De Dion Promotional Book/Stereoscopic Viewer, produced to advertise the French auto manufacturers, which sold for £350.

This comes after a 44-year-old Volkswagen in “time warp” condition was found in a garage with just two miles on the clock.

Plus, a stunning Ford Capri in “outstanding” condition was up for auction and set to go under the hammer for an eye-watering price.
