It was Wimbledon’s first singles meeting between a Ukrainian player and one of the country’s aggressor nations.

And Svitolina collapsed on to her back, holding her face, after winning a deciding ten-point tie-break 11-9.

The pair refused a  handshake at the end, opting for  a racquet salute instead.

Some fans jeered Azarenka off court and she responded by cuffing her wrists together above her head.

The pair barely acknowledged each other when they walked on, refusing to even look at one another during the coin toss for choice of service and ends.

Cries of “Slava Ukraini” — glory to Ukraine —  broke out  from the heavily Svitolina-backing crowd.

Svitolina thanked fans and said:  “After giving birth, this was the second happiest moment of my life.

“When I was 2-0 down in the second set I heard you guys cheering for me and almost wanted to cry.
