The 1980 Mk II 1600 Sport has a bit of an unusual historyEBay
A Mk II Escort, it was produced in 1980, the final year before the model was renewed for a third generation.
This particular example was assembled by Ford in South Africa using a shell manufactured at the brand’s Merseyside plant, famous for being the birthplace of models like the Capri.
It has retained many of the original parts and comes with a full history file, detailing how it was exported to the UK in 2011.
The file also includes the import and registration documents as well as original South African paperwork.
The listing on eBay described the car as a “show stopper” and notes that it has been “wonderfully preserved”.
A look inside reveals a “spotlessly clean” vinyl and fabric trim, which again is original.
And the engine bay houses the Escort’s iconic 1600GT engine, which puts out a top speed of 101mph, a pretty good clip for the ’80s.
The owner does mention that the car has undergone some light restoration.
A pin dent was worked out of the bonnet and is now “unnoticeable” while the gearbox and clutch were replaced with equivalent stock parts.
The ad goes on: “Welcome to my listing for the reluctant sale of my Ford Escort Mk 2 1600 Sport which I have owned for around 7 years.
“[It’s]… in show condition.
“This car is truly a rare find being completely unmolested, any viewings or inspections are most welcome, you will not be disappointed.
“Being a classic enthusiast I know what I have here so no time wasters please.”
In that vein, the Escort has already attracted some major bids, with the current pot standing at £21,600.
Viewing can be arranged by appointment and the auction is set to end on January 14.
