Hyundai and Kia have announced the recall of over three million of their cars, with owners urged to park outdoors until they can be collected.
Nearly two dozen models made between 2010 and 2017 are affected by a problem with the anti-lock braking system.
The manufacturers explained that the ABS may leak fluid into the engine bay, possibly leading to a short circuit and electrical fires.
This is caused by an O-ring failing due to prolonged exposure to brake fluid.
They are now working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make drivers aware and recover the cars.
Hyundai has said that it can fix the problem by replacing a fuse in the ABS module.
Kia is yet to issue any solution but it is likely to be similar.
Between them, they had received reports of 21 fires and 21 “thermal events”, with no injuries or deaths coming as a result.
However, drivers have been warned that the fires can be sparked at any time, even when the ignition is switched off.
Official advice is to avoid parking indoors where possible so that any fire will not have significant collateral damage.
Affected models include variants of the Kia Rio, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Accent and Hyudani Tuscon among others.
Hyundai and Kia have been contacted for comment.
It comes after two popular EVs were recalled over a similar fire risk this month.
Meanwhile, over a million Chinese EVs were recalled in May over a braking fault causing a safety risk.
