Urgent warning as dozens of cheeses removed from shelves after Brit died in outbreak

SEVERAL packs of cheese have been pulled from shelves over fears they could be contaminated with the deadly food bug, listeria.

The Food Standards Agency has warned vulnerable people to watch out for the 26 risky cheeses made by The Cambridge Food Company.

Cheddar, Stilton and Caerphilly are among the many varieties that the Wiltshire brand sold to 15 farm shops across England, including in LondonEssex and Cambridge.

The recall includes all packaged and cut cheese that have a ‘use by’ date up to and including April 14, 2023.

Symptoms are flu-like and include fever, muscle aches or pains and vomiting and diarrhoea.

In a statement to customers last week, the manufacturer said the recall was ‘precautionary’ step over concerns that these cheeses were cross-contaminated with Baronet cheese products believed to be infected.

It comes after health chiefs announced last week that a Brit had died from listeria in an outbreak linked to contaminated Baronet cheese.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) previously recalled some batches of Baronet cheeses made by the Old Cheese Room in Wiltshire.

Experts said there have been three listeria cases all ‘potentially’ linked to the cheese.

Brits who fear they have bought a contaminated product are told not to eat it and to contact the seller for more information.

Previous outbreaks of listeria have been linked to cold meats and pre-prepared sandwiches.

In 2019, there was a significant listeria outbreak in NHS hospitals caused by contaminated sandwiches, leading to the deaths of seven people.

People at risk of serious illness should contact 111 immediately if they believe they have listeriosis.

You may need a blood test to determine if you’ve been infected.

You should call 999 or go to A&E if you experience more severe symptoms – symptom 7 to 9 on the list.

What cheeses have been pulled from shelves?

More than two dozen artisan cheese cuts have been recalled.

The retailers that have sold the cheese are: Ben & Ellas farmshop, Bridge 67 Butchers, Bury Lane farm shop, Chestnut Farm, Direct Caterers and Flourish Farm Shop ltd, Knibbs meat safe, Liquorice Wine & Deli ltd, Meat n16, Meat n6, Meat nw5, Norfolk St Deli Papworth, The Cookhouse Deli, The Larder at Burwash Manor and Trendalls Butcher.
