Ahead of the match, he said his side would continue to play out from the back as they have in the Championship.

Martin also admitted it would be “his fault” if the approach backfired.

Discussing his comments with ITV presenter Mark Pougatch, Keane quipped: “Good luck with that.

“Good luck with that. I’ll keep saying it. You get away with this obviously in the Championship if you lose it and it’s well and good playing out but you’ve got to do it at the right time.

“If they do it too often and get caught, they’ll be punished.”

The Saints stuck to their bold game plan at Anfield, though, scoring in the opening minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Kamaldeen Sulemana later struck the post during an end-to-end opening half.

However, the visitors trailed at the break after Reds debutant Lewis Koumas scored on the stroke of half-time.

Southampton’s style of play has seen them score 65 goals in 34 Championship matches this season.

Martin’s side are currently fourth in the table as they chase an immediate return to the Premier League.

Victory over Liverpool will see them progress to the last eight of the FA Cup for the second time in three seasons.

A trip to either Nottingham Forest or Manchester United awaits the winner following the quarter-final draw earlier in the evening.
