‘Unhirable’: Why Michelle Pfeiffer ‘disappeared’ from Hollywood

Michelle Pfeiffer was one of the leading ladies of the big screen a few decades ago.

The American actress, now 65, was in some of the biggest films of the ’80s and ’90s including Scarface, Grease 2, Batman Returns, I Am Sam and The Deep End of the Ocean.

Pfeiffer soon became a sex symbol in Hollywood and even to this day has proven sway and influence, with mentions in two hit songs in recent years – Vance Joy’s Riptide and Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk.

But in her own words, despite being on top of her game, Pfeiffer soon “disappeared” from the spotlight. 9Honey Celebrity takes a look at where the actress is now and what she’s up to.

Why is Michelle Pfeiffer so famous? What movie is she known for?

1983’s Scarface, co-starring Al Pacino and Steven Bauer, helped solidify Pfeiffer’s sex symbol status.

She portrayed the character Elvira Hancock in the hit film and she was about 25 years old at the time of being cast in the gangster film.

She said on The Skinny Confidential podcast: ”I cried myself to sleep almost every night on Scarface.”

She said she was ”scared” to work with Al Pacino on the film because she thought she was ”going to be bad”. They now have a decades-long friendship.

Another of her most iconic roles was as Catwoman in Batman Returns, which came out in 1992.

She previously spoke about learning to use Selina Kyle’s whip, telling ET: “It was very graceful and elegant. And actually very dancelike and beautiful. And kind of more feline really.”

She once whipped the heads off four mannequins in a row with the whip while on set.

Why did she turn away from acting?

Although she only recently stepped back into the spotlight, Pfeiffer insists she “never lost her love for acting”.

Speaking to Interview magazine recently, Pfeiffer said she “disappeared”.

“I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person honestly when I’m working.

“But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kids’ schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhirable,” she explained.

Pfeiffer’s family life and marriage

The Hollywood star is married to David E. Kelley, a former attorney turned TV writer and film producer.

“About last night… 🤍,” she recently wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of the pair together.
