Ultra-rare Mercedes named after F1 icon to sell for MILLIONS… but it’s missing a key piece of kit

AN ULTRA-RARE Mercedes-Benz SLR with McLaren power that’s named after a Formula 1 legend is up for auction – but it’s missing a key piece of kit.

The super-fast motor is ready to sell for millions next month… but the next owner might want to pack a pair of goggles.

Only 75 of the supercars were made some 15 years ago – which were originally sold for a cool £780,000 each.

However, that price has trippled over the years with this one set to fetch £2.7million at a car auction in Dubai next month.

According to the RM Sotheby’s listing, the 641 bhp, 5.4-litre V-8 engined beast can hit a lofty top speed of 219mph while hitting 0 to 60mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Perhaps best of all, the supercar is inspired by F1 legend Sir Stirling Moss’ Mille Miglia endurance race victory in 1955.

Because of this, the car does come with a couple of drawbacks in the form of absolutely no windscreen or roof.

This particular motor boats just 5,737 miles on the clock – which works out at just 382 per a year.

A Sotheby’s spokesperson said: “The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show.

“A lightweight speedster variant of the SLR as potent in performance as it is arresting in appearance.

“Just 75 examples were built, offered exclusively to existing SLR owners as a modern homage to the exquisite 300 SLR that Stirling Moss campaigned to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

“Rather like the 300 SLR, nearly all the creature comforts of the car it is based on were sacrificed in the pursuit of performance, aesthetics and extreme driving enjoyment.

“Even the windscreen and roof were forfeited, which not only adds to the visual drama but ramps up the intensity of the driving experience tenfold.”

They added: “This level of performance is accomplished by utilising the same 641 brake horsepower, 5.4-litre supercharged AMG V-8 that powers the SLR 722 Edition and pairing it with 200 kilograms of weight savings.”

“Achieved by adoption of the speedster style as well as the extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork, underside, and new aerodynamic package.

“Undoubtably one of the most memorable supercars produced thus far into the 21st Century, the SLR Stirling Moss provides a truly unrivalled driving experience to its lucky owners.

“This example would be no exception to that rule, and would surely thrill the most demanding of enthusiasts.”
