BRITAIN’S “most wanted” classic cars have been revealed, including an iconic Jaguar sports car worth up to £1.7 million.

High-end manufacturers including Mercedes, Aston Martin and Porsche were all represented, as well a surprisingly modern McLaren.

The top 10 list was compiled exclusively for Sun Motors by InsureMy, an insurance provider specialising in classic cars.

The findings were based on a study of 2,000 enthusiasts who were asked which retro motor they would buy if money was no object.

Legendary models including the Porsche 917K, the Mercedes W196 and the Ford GT40 all ranked highly.

However, none could challenge the dominance of Aston Martin, which locked out the top three.

The luxury brand’s DP215 racing prototype came in third, just pipped by its ’50s-era predecessor the DBR1, driven by Sir Stirling Moss.

The latter became the most expensive British-made car ever in 2017, when it sold for £17.5 million.

That makes the £1.7 million price for the Jaguar D-type, which claimed fourth place, seems like small change.

Despite the immense price tag, though, the DBR1 still lost out on top spot in favour of the DB4GT Zagato.

Designed by Zagato, a specialist coachbuilder in Italy, only three were ever produced.

One even went under the hammer back in 2018, attracting a bid of £10 million.

Elsewhere, a surprising inclusion on the list came in the form of of the McLaren F1 as it’s almost too new to be considered a classic car.

Indeed, being built in the 1990s, it’s not yet a “historic vehicle” under DVLA rules.

Nonetheless, it actually makes two appearances in the table, with the 1992 original coming in sixth and the LM version built in 1995 to honour the team’s performance at Le Mans slotting in at ninth.

The study also revealed which manufacturers, regardless of model, were most desirable, with Aston Martin again securing top billing.

Meanwhile, Ferrari, Bugatti, Shelby and Alfa Romeo all found acclaim despite none of their models making the top 10.

Stewart Barnett from InsureMy said: “While there are a few ‘newer’ models in the most wanted list – like the McLaren F1 from the 1990s and 2000s – British drivers are pretty unanimous that the ‘oldies are the goodies’.

“The top 5 are all from the 1950s and 1960s, showing that if people have the money to spend, they will splash out on a classic.

“And while most people can only dream of owning an Aston Martin from the 1960s Le Mans era, there are plenty of motorists out there with their ‘classic’ cars – anything that is over 40 years old.

“Cars – particularly classic cars – can carry a lot of memories and emotions, and their owners can become very attached, and want to know that they are protected, so that they can be enjoyed for years to come.”
