UK’s biggest McDonald’s drive-thru where customers drive for miles to visit it – the building is so unique

MCDONALD’S customers drive miles to visit the fast-foods biggest drive-thru in the country.

Visitors have described the restaurant as the “Disney Land of all McDonald’s.”

Formby is home to the largest drive-thru McDonald’s in the country

The fast food chain’s Formby restaurant in Merseyside is the largest example of its drive-thru in the country.

The barn-like building houses 279 seats, an outside patio seating area, a play area and a barista coffee area.

But that’s not all – it also houses offices and a training centre for the McDonald’s franchise in the region.

The restaurant opened back in 2019 and its popularity has seen its TikTok channel amass 6,404 followers.

And visitors have flocked across the country to visit the gargantuan Formby McDonald’s.

Two customers posted about the drive-thru on TikTok and said: “We’re at the UK’s biggest McDonald’s in Formby – it’s a whopper.

“It’s enormous, it looks like a big barn. It’s the Disney Land of McDonald’s.

To bring humour to the visit the paid explained that they had to have “the smallest meal in the biggest McDonald’s” – and they ordered Happy Meals as a result.

The video scooped over 218,000 views – owing to the restaurant’s popularity.

The first franchise manager Mark Blundell told the Liverpool Echo back in 2019: “It was an empty and existing restaurant building which we converted into a McDonalds rather than replace with one of our traditional buildings.

“We think the Formby store is a fantastic looking and unique building… the Formby site had taken over the previous site of a drive-thru independent diner, which was massive.

“It is fantastic to be such a destination for not just our local customers but to customers around the country. The site is a unique site that people are intrigued by.”

McDonald’s has more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK and employs more than 120,000 people.

The first drive-thru restaurants opened in Fallowfield (Manchester), Dudley, Neasden (London) and Coventry back in 1986.

Today, around 1,000 McDonald’s restaurants have drive-thru facilities.

It comes as the fast-food chain recently opened its second-ever net zero carbon branch in Louth, Lincolnshire.

Its new revolutionary features set it apart from other restaurants.

The fast food drive-thru area has Smart Digital menu boards – which are topped with solar panels.

Electric charging points are also available in the car park.

The interior has also been decorated with recycled materials.

McDonald’s previously announced a huge menu shake-up earlier this month.

The change saw these six items axed from the menu:

Big Tasty – £5.29 on its own or £6.89 as a mealBig Tasty with bacon – £5.89 on its own or £7.49 as a mealCheese Melt Dippers – £2.29Cheese Melt Dippers Sharebox – £5.99Celebrations McFlurry – £1.79 for regularFestive Pie – £1.29

We’ve previously reviewed the biggest McDonald’s in the world.

The largest restaurant is found in Florida, not far from Universal Orlando Resort, where the three-storey restaurant has an entire arcade floor inside.

It was redesigned in 2016 and now has a 22ft tall play area with slides and rides for kids at the Kid’s Club Tree House, although there is also a toddler area too.

The second floor is dedicated to arcade games, with more than 100 to choose from including shooting games and claw machines.
