Michael Bisping reckons the former two-division champ is making a huge mistake
Michael Chandler is set to be the Dubliner’s opponent for his UFC return in the summer
Dubliner McGregor took to social media with a video last week as he announced that he’ll return on June 29 against ‘Iron Mike’.
McGregor took to X to announce that he will fight the former Bellator lightweight champion Chandler after months of speculation regarding his return.
The Notorious beamed as he claimed the bout will be at the 185lbs – a career heaviest for both Chandler and McGregor.
But former UFC middleweight champion Bisping reckons an fight at 185 would be a mistake for the ex-UFC featherweight and lightweight kingpin.
Bisping, who famously knocked out Luke Rockhold to become the UFC 185lbs champion in 2016, has advised the Irishman against making his debut at middleweight.
Speaking on his Believe You Me podcast, the Manchester native said: “He fought at 145, went up to 155, 185 that is not his optimal weight class,”
“Granted, he’s fighting another lightweight in Michael Chandler. The problem is that, as I say, it’s not your optimal weight class, so they’re going to be carrying more weight.
“I’m not hating on Conor and I’m really excited for the fight because he’s the most exciting guy because of the energy and the presence and the hype and the performances.
“Win or lose, and there’s been losses recently, they’re still big moments and the comeback is going to be something special, it really is.
“But I think with all that extra weight it’s going to be an issue.”
McGregor hasn’t fought since breaking his leg in the lightweight trilogy fight against Dustin Poirer at UFC 264 in 2021.
But he has made a full recovery and returned to training with comebacks rumours shortly following.
While the ‘middleweight bout’ is yet to be confirmed by the promotion, the former double-champion was in talks with Dana White in recent days about a return fight.
