Travis Kelce says NFL is ‘overdoing it’ with Taylor Swift coverage

Plenty of NFL fans have been up in arms about their favourite players having to share the spotlight with the one and only Taylor Swift.

But is her own rumoured boyfriend Travis Kelce starting to get jealous of the attention too?

Well, not really, but he does think the NFL is overdoing it a bit.

On the newest episode of their podcast New Heights, Travis and Jason Kelce talk about the attention celebrities have been getting at the recent NFL games.

Jason joked about Mama Kelce ‘slumming it with some B-list celebs’ at the recent Chiefs v Jets game in New Jersey, to which Travis quickly jumped to those said celebs’ defence.

“Hey, hey don’t be choppin ’em down,” he said.

After a quick apology Jason quickly jumped into a topic it seems he’d been itching to talk about.

“Okay, let’s get right to it,” he said, “Is the NFL overdoing it? What is your honest opinion, take away your feelings for Taylor. What is your honest opinion on how the NFL is treating celebrities at games?”

Travis gives a quick nervous chuckle and goes a bit red in the face at the mention of his ‘feelings for Taylor’ (adorable) before answering.

“I think it’s fun when they show who alls at the game you know, I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, a little bit more to what your watching,” he says.

“But at the same time I think they’re overdoing it a little bit, for sure, especially my situation. I think they’re just trying to have fun with it.”

Before he can finish his next thought, Jason, who seems to have put a lot of thought into the issue, jumps in to say he just thinks the NFL isn’t used to celebrities being at the games.

The NFL has jumped on the Swift bandwagon, posting her attendance at the past two Kansas City Chiefs games across social media, showing her multiple times on the live broadcast, even going as far to change their social media bios.

A spokesperson for the NFL has spoken to People in response to the comments made by the Kelce brothers.

“The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we’ve leaned into in real time, as it’s an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we’ve seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport,” they said.

“The vast majority of our content has remained focused on the game, our players and a variety of other initiatives.”

The Kelce brothers did note that they don’t expect the NFL to slow down anytime soon, with Monday morning’s (Sunday US time) Chiefs v Jets game receiving record numbers with over 27 million viewers.

Sure, the NFL has always been huge in the US, but taking the opportunity to capitalise on the Swiftie viewership hasn’t only expanded their demographic within the country, it’s also taken the sport international.

Travis Kelce himself gained over 300,000 new Instagram followers and saw his jersey sales increase by almost 400 per cent following Swift’s first appearance at his September 24 game.

So, even if the NFL is overdoing it, can you really blame them?
