‘Tragedy for The Queen’ – lucky Charles gets ‘best’ crop of late mum’s horses to share with Camilla

ONE of the late Queen’s most trusted friends says it is a ‘great tragedy’ she is not here to see her ‘best’ crop of horses.

Lucky King Charles is set to benefit from the top class group of thoroughbreds he now shares with Queen Consort Camilla.

John Warren, the Royal racing adviser and one of the last people to speak to Queen Elizabeth before she passed away last September, says he believes this year’s crop of yearlings could prove to be her ‘best’.

The late Queen, who died aged 96, was a racing fanatic and keen breeder of horses.

Charles inherited all her runners after her death and was originally listed as the sole owner.

However, in a big break with tradition, Queen Consort Camilla is now listed as the co-owner alongside Charles.

Warren told the Racing Post that he felt it was a ‘great tragedy’ the late monarch is not here to see her stars ready for life on the racecourse.

He said: “The great tragedy for the Queen is I think she has bred her best crop of yearlings this year.

“History will prove me right or wrong, but I believe the current crop could go all the way.

“I really do think the Queen has a serious chance of leaving a very important legacy.”

Charles has already made significant changes to the multi-million pound Royal racing operation.

In addition to bringing on Camilla as co-owner, he has hired Ralph Beckett – a trainer the Queen did not use – to train four highly promising two-year-olds.

Charles also made more than £1million selling 14 of the late Queen’s horses last year.

And he could have his first Cheltenham Festival winner in the shape of Steal A March next month.

The Nicky Henderson-trained runner is around a 16-1 shot for the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle.

Victory in the 3m race is worth £56,270 and Henderson hopes the Royal couple will be there to cheer their horse home in person.
