TOURISTS have been caught saving sunbeds with their towels as early as six o’clock in the morning at a holiday resort – insisting they would all be gone if they’d waited much longer.
Every summer, holidaymakers are seen battling for beds around the pool and the trend looks like it will almost certainly continue this year.

In a video captured recently, a tourist filmed from the balcony as her friend kicked off the sunbed wars at what looks to be a popular resort in Marmaris by laying down the first towel of the day.
Tiktoker Sophie (@welcometosophiesworld) shared the footage of her fellow tourist, insisting the pair couldn’t sleep, so decided to make the most of being awake early in the morning.
Some people were angered by the video, even though Sophie claimed that all the beds would be reserved by other tourists if they’d been any slower.
In her video, she said: “It’s six o’ clock in the morning; we can’t sleep.
“[My friend] was like, ‘I’m going to go and get a sunbed’.
“I’m not even joking though, leave it another hour and they’re all going to be gone.”
And sure enough, as her friend is seen making her way back up the stairs to her room, a man is seen heading the opposite way down to the poolside with his towels to mark his territory as well.
The footage has since been seen more than 78,000 times since it was shared online, with some viewers really unhappy with what they’d seen.
One commented: “Hope the towel is gone when you come down.”
Another added: “Hope someone throws them in the pool.”
However, others were less annoyed, having experienced similar things on their trips abroad.
One wrote: “In Turkey we used to be on sunbeds for 5.30, couldn’t move til 9, otherwise staff would throw towels in pool.”
Another said: “One hotel i went you had to do them the night before or you’d have no luck.”
Sophie and her friend aren’t the first this year to be involved in early morning sunbed reserving.
Another Tiktoker, Thomas Clifford (@thomaswclifford), captured similar footage during his holiday to Tenerife.
In his video, people are seen queueing up around the pool shortly before 8am, before darting towards the best spots, to make sure they get their towels down.
One person commented: “This isn’t a holiday.”
Etiquette expert William Hanson revealed how long it’s okay to reserve a lounger for.
If you wait too long before you use the bed, it could be acceptable for someone else to remove your towel and take the lounger for themselves.
He told the Mirror: “Reserving sun loungers with a towel for longer than 30 minutes is a big no-no, beyond that grace period it’s first come first served.”
Meanwhile, holidaymakers have even taken to reserving spots on the ground at some resorts.
And It is also always worth checking to see if the hotel has its own individual policy on reserving sun loungers.
