But they have raised more money from player sales than any club, with £1.7bn brought in.
That means Chelsea are only £90million worse off than the next highest spenders, Manchester City, despite splashing out £750m more on signings than the Citizens since the turn of the century.
City have spent £2.35bn since 2000 with much of their outlay coming post the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008.
They have also sold big and collected £855m in sales, giving them a net spend of £1.45bn, just ahead of rivals Manchester United.
United and Paris Saint-Germain have spent more than a billion on transfers since the new millennium, splashing out on the likes of Harry Maguire and Kylian Mbappe respectively.
However PSG’s expenditure is less than Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, who have both spent more than £2bn on players in the last 23 years.
But their transfer income means Real rank fifth on the list and Barcelona seventh – only Chelsea have brought in more money than the Spaniards.
Arsenal rank in between that pair at sixth with an outlay of £852m – the Gunners spent more than £200m this summer alone and around £574m since Mikel Arteta took charge in December 2019.
