For most motorists, fellow road users not following the Highway Code can be really irritating.

One common bug-bear occurs when drivers are stuck in traffic or if two lanes merge into one.

For drivers in the left hand lane – either stuck at a standstill or heading to a roundabout – they sometimes have to deal with cars forcing their way in from the right.

And while it might irritate you as you try to prevent them from being let in, they’re actually doing what you’re supposed to do.

Experts have revealed that driving right up until you’re supposed to merge stops tailbacks of queues and issues.

The RAC said: “Some motorists have been left annoyed and confused by the sight of drivers passing them on the right-hand lane only to then zip-merge at the last minute.

“But according to the law, those so-called “queue-jumpers” are in the right, with zip-merging used more commonly than you might think to help ease congestion at traffic pinch points.

“In the event of two lanes merging, motorists are supposed to use both lanes up until the point of lane closure, at which point they are supposed to take it in turns to merge into one lane, just like a zipper.

“Drivers merging ahead of time are actually causing further tailbacks by choosing to merge as soon as possible.”

It comes after people were divided when a driver overtook 50 cars while obeying the Highway Code.

Dashcam footage shows the car driving down a three-lane motorway before spotting a sign that their lane will be closed in 400 yards.

But while traffic begins to move over to the left-hand lanes, the car with the dashcam remains in the lane that will be closing shortly.

As the roadwork cones start to appear up ahead, the car then moves across and filters into the left lane – with plenty of space left to do so.

TikTok user @dills_taxi captioned the video: “Merging done right.”

And they then admitted people would accuse them of “cutting in”
