With the green in sight all Woods needed to do was arrow the ball directly in front of him.

But he shanked the shot and hit a tree with his effort, much to the shock of fans at the Golf Riviera Course.

Viewers watching on at home also found amusement in the mistake, though they were amazed by his follow-up shot.

Woods was placed in the rough directly behind a tree and had a narrow gap to find the green, but he found it with precision and left himself with a putting opportunity, which he took to finish one over par.

One fan reacted to the shank saying: “This makes me feel better about my own golf game.”

Another added: “The next shot was absolutely insane though…ball below feet in deep rough, small window in between two trees. He then hits the shot and gets on the green to get a putt for par.”

And a third wrote: “Show his next shot. Spectacular!”

Woods, 48, put the blunder down to a back spasm but was happy to admit it was a shank.

He said: “Oh I shanked it, definitely. My back was spasming the last couple of holes and was locking up.

“I came down and it didn’t move and I presented hosel first.”
