Three festive items that will get you stopped at airport security

IF you’re heading on holiday this festive season, you should double check the rules of the airport before packing.

Three popular Christmas items are banned from going in your hand luggage and could cause you problems at security.

If you are returning from a Christmas market break, you may have picked up a snow globe souvenir.

However, these are banned from being taken in hand luggage, due to the airport being unable to tell the quantity of liquid inside.

The liquid rule where it has to be under 100ml is set to be scrapped across the UK (with some airports already ditching it) but most will still have to follow these restrictions.

The British Airways website states: “During the festive season, when spirits are high, it’s easy to forget that the usual rules apply when you fly.

“So it’s worth emphasising that liquids – such as wine and champagne gifts, or even snow globes for example – cannot be carried in your cabin bag.”

Ryanair also warns against packing “water-filled Christmas decorations such as snow globes”.

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) warns that the entire snow globe must fit into the plastic bag required for liquids to be allowed on the plane, as well as be “less than 3.4oz of liquids”.

And it’s not just snow globes that face restrictions on the plane.

Wrapped presents could get you into trouble as well.

This is because airport security staff may need to look inside the item, which will mean undoing the wrapping paper.

The British Airways website states: “Please don’t carry wrapped presents in your hand baggage – airport staff would hate to undo all your hard work if they need opening at Security.

“Instead, carry your gift, paper, bows and tags separately so you can get wrapping once you arrive.”

Ryanair also warns: “Don’t spend hours intricately wrapping gifts to carry in your hand luggage

“Wrapped gifts may be opened, searched and screened by airport security staff.”

This is also backed by the TSA.

If you are travelling to the US, you cannot take any Christmas crackers with you either.

Some UK airlines will allow Christmas crackers if travelling short-haul, with easyJet and BA allowing 2 boxes of sealed crackers.

Airlines including Ryanair, Wizz Air and Cathay Pacific have banned crackers in hand luggage.

With some Christmas crackers costing as much as £100, it’s best to not take them with you in the cabin.

Here are the airlines with the strictest hand luggage rules.
