Under new guidance introduced today, local authorities will have the flexibility to allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes in their area.

According to guidance from the Department for Transport, these new rules outline that local authorities have the flexibility to allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes in their area.
The new rules outline what local authorities need to make the changes, explain the use of traffic signs to implement schemes and provide advice on monitoring schemes.
They’re also advised to launch consultations that will result in better acceptance of new schemes and lead to fewer problems.
Allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes was first trialled in the 1990s, with various monitoring and research projects carried out to determine the effects of these schemes on both bikers and other road users.
Government data suggests that 1.4 million people use motorcycles, scooters and mopeds.
In a comment to The Sun Motors, the Department for Transport said: “This was announced a while ago as part of our Plan for Drivers with the guidance updated today.”
And in a statement from September last year, they said: “To make life easier for drivers and help traffic flow better, the Department for Transport will strengthen guidance to make sure bus lanes only operate when necessary and a consultation will be launched on motorcycles using bus lanes.”
