The flights to Latvian capital Riga will run from October 29, giving Brits the perfect opportunity to explore the lesser-known city break option.

Riga is the largest city both in Latvia and the Baltic states.

It’s home to the world’s largest food market and is renowned for its food scene, alongside eclectic architecture and lush green spaces.

It’s also pretty affordable, with pints in the city available from as little as €2 (£1.70).

The Savvy Backpacker explained: “Riga’s cheap prices, super cheap booze, bustling nightlife, and beautiful scenery make it an ideal location for budget travellers.

“Beer in a bar costs about €2-€3. Beer from a grocery store is €1 (86p) or less, a bottle of wine about €6 (£5).”

Hotels in the city are fairly affordable too, with some places available online from £21 per night.

However, for those less interested in arranging everything themselves, package options are available too.

British Airways Holidays customers can choose from a wide range of carefully selected hotels, with two-night city break packages from £169 per person.

The flights are announced in time for people to book festive trips to the city, with Riga’s Christmas market considered one of the best in Europe.

The old city, the KGB building and Bastejkalna Park are among the best-rated sites on TripAdvisor.

Riga isn’t the only new destination Brits can visit with BA this year, with Belgrade in Serbia also getting new flights.

A three-times weekly service will also from London Heathrow from October 31. Flights will be available from £105.

The airline say that visitors are attracted by the city’s “compelling history, exciting nightlife, and buzzing Bohemian quarter, Skadarlija”.

There will also be new flights to Cologne in Germany, with a 12-times weekly service from Heathrow starting on October 30.

Return fares are available from £92.

In addition to major landmark Cologne Cathedral, Cologne is home to world-class museums, the historic old town and a bustling scene of traditional German food and drink.

Two-night British Airways Holidays packages are available from £219 per person.

Meanwhile, these are the best European holiday destinations to visit this year.

And you can travel around a holiday hotspot for less than £1 this year.
