BRITS have been warned against swimming at more than 70 beaches across the UK.
Heavy rainfall has led to sewage discharge into a number of beaches, with Surfers Against Sewage issuing a warning to avoid the water.

Using an interactive map to show the affected spots, it warns: “Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours.”
More than 70 beaches across the UK have been affected.
This includes Gorleston Beach, which was recently named the best beach in the country.
Popular beaches affected include Brighton, Blackpool, Whitby and Whitstable.

Anyone who swims in polluted water can fall ill if they digest the water, as well as suffer from skin infections.
Surfers Against Sewage monitors the water quality at over 400 locations around UK rivers and coastlines.
The group estimated that there have been “over 400,000 discharges of untreated sewage into UK rivers and almost 5,500 discharges into UK coastal bathing waters”.
In 2021, Southern Water was fined a record £90 million for deliberately pumping 16 to 21 billion litres of sewage into the sea between 2010 and 2015.
And authorities have warned Brits not to swim at a popular UK beach for the entire YEAR due to safety concerns.
St Mary’s Bay on Romney Marsh in Kent has been slapped with a warning by the Environment Agency.
The warning comes after fecal matter was found in the water, leading to unsafe levels of bacteria.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the spike, with fears it is due to pollution.
