However, Sonning often proves itself to be one of the most crowd-pleasing, with several A-list celebs choosing to making it their home.

Perhaps most famous among them is George Clooney, who bought a huge home there with his wife Amal in 2016.

The pair live in a grade II listed 17th century mansion that has its own 12-seat home cinema and a swimming pool.

The Clooneys are said to be “virtually invisible” in the village, and are “screened by a veil of lush foliage that reveals only a hint of rooftop and a glimmer of a boathouse next to the water’s edge” according to Mail Online.

The pair aren’t the only famous people to live in the village however, with Led Zeppelin front man Jimmy Page, former Spurs and England player Glenn Hoddle and ex-prime minister Theresa May also residents.

It’s no surprise though with the village receiving glowing reviews from people online.

UK blogger Pictures of England described it as “picture perfect” after paying a visit, praising the architecture in particular.

They wrote: “Situated on the river Thames, Sonning is a picture-perfect village well worth a visit, with its many listed buildings and wonderful Saxon church.”

Another place that seems to be a favourite among visitors is the French Horn, a hotel and restaurant that claims to sit “by The Thames, at the point where the river is at its most beautiful”.

Head Chef Josiane Diaga and team “select the best seasonal ingredients and treat them with respect” serving them to customers in the village’s picturesque surroundings.

An outdoor dining area backs onto the river, with Luxury travel blogger Ana Silva O’Reilly writing on Instagram that it was a “Perfect Sunday lunch”.

One of her followers commented, saying it was their “fave part of the world”.

Further along the banks of the Thames in Sonning is the Mill theatre – a converted 18th century water mill that hosts a variety of performances, including plays, musicals and live comedy.

Travel blogging couple Darek and Gosia were also big fans of the village after their visit, with the scenery and boating all impressing them.

Anyone interested in upping sticks and moving to the village might find it difficult, with the average home in the village worth a hefty £931,364, according to Berkshire Live.

They also report that a detached home could set you back as much as £1,105,714.

However, a visit is much more affordable, with a night in a nearby pub available from £27pp per night.

The popular Great House at Sonning, a former Elizabethan coaching inn on a quiet stretch of the Thames, is available from £58pp per night.

Meanwhile, this UK village is home to the best pub in England.
