The three weirdest places people put their Wi-Fi router that cause havoc for connection speeds – including INSIDE walls

PEOPLE put their Wi-Fi routers in all sorts of places in an attempt to hide the ugly boxes.

Unfortunately, keeping your broadband hub out of sight isn’t the best idea for the connection.

Router placement is everything if you want the strongest possible signalGetty

Many attempt to stick them in bookcases so they blend in, while others put them in cupboards.

These can all prevent the signal from spreading across your home – so as a rule, you need to keep the router visible if you want decent coverage.

Here are some of the worst places people have been known to put theirs.

Inside the walls

One customer wanted their Wi-Fi box out of sight so much that they enclosed it within their walls without an access hatch.

Little did they realise the chaos it would cause whenever the router needed to be reset or replaced.

Hal Ponton, Chief Architect at Voneus Broadband, told The Sun that in a previous job as an engineer the homeowner said he didn’t think he would need to touch the router ever again.

“He actually had to saw a hatch into his wall just to get his router out,” Hal said.

Boiler cupboard

Another place people have been caught putting their router is in the boiler cupboard.

It’s important for your router to keep cool, so next to a boiler is the worst place to put it.

An overworked hub means it can’t perform properly, resulting in bad signals.

Not only that, it could be quite dangerous putting an electrical item in such hot conditions.

Basement

The basement is a bad place to put your router because it’s low down away from all the gadgets that need Wi-Fi signal.

Your box needs to be in a central spot in the home ideally so the signal can distribute evenly.

High up is best for the same reason, as opposed to leaving it on the floor.
