The packing mistake that everyone hates on planes – and why you shouldn’t do it

A PLANE passenger has revealed a packing mistake that passengers make when on board planes that really annoys other people.

A lot of people like to save space by flying with only carry on luggage, and wearing some of their bulkier items.

However, that can lead to disputes as passengers get on the aircraft, with room in the overhead bins in great demand.

Instead of putting coats and jackets in their cases, some people will choose to store them in the overhead lockers, taking up some of the precious bag space.

Tiktoker @HillnPoo have told their followers to put coats and jackets either on their laps, or hang them on hooks that can be found of the back of most plane seats.

In a video on their account, they said: “If you plan to fly in 2023, please don’t be the people who fill up an entire overhead cabinet with your jackets.

“Please keep them at your seat. It’s an absolute waste of space.

“They could sit on your lap, or most airlines have hooks.”

They then later added in the comments that jackets can go in the overhead bin, but only “after everyone has had the chance to put their bags up top”.

Their video has been seen more than 243,000 times since it was shared, with people divided by their advice.

Some people agreed, with one writing: “Yes please! It’s storage for big luggage not a wardrobe.”

A flight attendant also backed up the advice, saying: “Hi I am a flight attendant, I hate when passengers put their coats in the bin.

“Please hold until the luggage is in the bin, then shove your coat in.”

A third person added: “I can’t deal with the jackets in the overhead bins. It’s not a coat closet. It’s for storing bags and luggage!”

However, there were those who disagreed and said that they could put their jackets in the overhead if they wanted.

One argued: “I don’t have any cabin luggage, pretty sure I’m allowed to store my jacket there.”

Another said: “You can also pay to check in your bag if my jacket is an issue.”

A third added: “One jacket per person shouldn’t take up that much space. Plenty of room for one carry on, one jacket.”

Jackets aren’t the only items passengers have been told not to store in the overheads.

Devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops can create a big risk if they’re left in bags or pockets.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration in America, airlines have to deal with at least one fire per week on board their planes because of devices not being stored correctly.

Issues arise during flights when batteries either overheat or get damaged in the overhead bins.

In 2022, there were at least 54 incidents in which devices, including laptops, phones, e-cigarettes and others, had to be extinguished for one reason or another in America alone.

Overheating and damaged batteries are considered so much of a risk that they’re now part of pre-flight safety demonstrations.

Passengers are warned to alert flight attendants if they lose their phones during a flight, rather than searching for them.

An experienced cabin crew member told Sun Online Travel: “All it takes is a crack in the wrong place on the phone and you’ve got flammable solvents exposed to the cabin, which can spark a fire.

“We know how the seats move and can be gentle with them while poking around in the crevices.

“Passengers aren’t likely to be as accustomed to the seats as we are and it creates more of a risk if they’re messing with the seat mechanisms while trying to recover their phones.”

Meanwhile, this flight attendant revealed the safety item that people often steal from planes.

And this is why you need to have airplane mode on whenever you fly.
