The much cheaper alternative to the Greek islands for next summer’s holidays

GREEK islands are much sought after holiday destinations, which unfortunately means that visiting them can be very expensive.

Luckily, there are plenty of alternative options, with people able to get a similar experience, while also looking after their wallets.

One country where there are plenty of affordable options is Montenegro, which is described as a country that “rivals Greece” with its seaside offerings.

Plenty of people are fans of the Balkan country, which has a stretch of coastline punctuated with stunning scenery and historic towns, making it a fascinating and beautiful place to visit.

Included in its admirers are the travel experts at Lonely Planet, who praised its beaches, along with everything else it has to offer.

They wrote: “The distance from one end of Montenegro’s coast to the other is not even 100km (62 miles) as the crow flies.

“Yet this tiny country still manages to snag some of the best scenery the Mediterranean has to offer.

“Tucked between historic, fortified towns are small, sparkling coves, divided by rocky headlands and lapped by remarkably clear Adriatic waters.”

Montenegro’s most famous beach is Sveti Stefan – which contains a five-star resort on a former 15th century residential village, built on a small island jutting out into the sea.

The likes of Marilyn Monroe, Princess Margaret and Brad Pitt are among those fortunate enough to have stayed on the island.

However, the beach next to the island is publicly accessible and visitors can sunbathe and swim along the shore next to the impressive island.

Culture Trip said of the island: “The public beach at Sveti Stefan is situated at the end of the causeway and provides excellent views of the quaint, red-roofed buildings and winding streets.

“This is a top choice if you like the sound of splitting time between white sandy beaches and first-rate luxury hotels.”

However, there are other beaches that people consider to be far nicer than the one at Sveti Stefan.

One of which is Jaz Beach, which appeared in the Telegraph’s list of beaches to rival Greece.

The beach is found in the area surrounding the town of Budva and has even hosted concerts by megastars including The Rolling Stones and Madonna.

The sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants, providing a lively and family friendly feel.

The Telegraph wrote: “he extensive bay of sand and pebbles boasts enough beach clubs, cafés and restaurants to ensure a spot on a comfy sunbed and satisfy any cravings for meaty ćevapi.

“A popular spot for families, Jaz Beach has child-friendly, calm shallows and extensive water sports opportunities.”

It’s not just Montenegro’s beaches that rival those in Greece, but its towns too, with Kotor one of the country’s most popular.

The fortified market town is situated in a secluded part of Kotor Bay, overlooking the sea, with a medieval old town build into the mountainous surroundings.

Day trips to or from Dubrovnik are also available, with some other amazing destinations right on its doorstep.

The Guardian described Kotor as: “Fjord-like, Unesco-listed Bay of Kotor, encircled by mountains, is unmissable.

“There are several medieval towns, numerous churches and monasteries around its shores.”

Montenegro’s towns and beaches make it an attractive holiday destination, while its prices mean its a perfect place to enjoy a holiday, while saving money.

Travelling Rauf, agreed, adding: “Montenegro offers a coastal experience that rivals Greece but with added affordability.

“So, if you’re craving a Mediterranean adventure without the hefty price tag, Montenegro is the place to be.”

Meanwhile, you could also consider these five destination dupes instead of overcrowded tourist hotspots.

And this UK city also doubles up as New York and other American places in films.
