A fall storm charging across the country this week will intensify over the central U.S. on Tuesday, fueling a threat of severe thunderstorms in the Plains while snow falls over the high country of the Rockies as colder air rushes in on the backside of the storm system.

Severe storms are likely Tuesday from parts of West Texas through southwestern Minnesota. Large hail upwards of 2 to 3 inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes are all possible with this severe weather threat. Back to the west, snow will continue to fall in some of the higher elevations of Wyoming, northern Utah and Colorado.

Temperatures in the Plains and Midwest have felt more like summer over the past couple of days, and now the Northeast will feel the unseasonable warmth as well.

After a rainy and cooler start to fall, the Northeast warms back up on Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures soar into the 80s. From New York to Maine, numerous record highs are in jeopardy due to temperatures climbing more than 20 degrees above average for early October.

Tropical Storm Philippe made landfall on Barbuda in the northern Leeward Islands Monday evening, and Tropical Storm Warnings still cover the islands of Barbuda, Antigua and Anguilla. While Philippe is expected to turn north and pull away from the islands, some rain and gusty winds will linger on Tuesday.

Between 4 and 8 inches of rain is expected from Barbuda southward to Dominica, with 3 to 5 inches predicted for the rest of the Leeward Islands and the northern Windward Islands. The Virgin Islands could also pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain. This heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding.
