The £1 item that holidaymakers rave about when travelling with hand luggage

ONE of the best ways to save money on a flight is to avoid paying extra for your luggage.

Airlines can ramp up the cost of tickets by charging passengers to bring extra items on board, leading people to come up with clever tricks to get around the rules.

Both Travel experts and professional packers alike routinely encourage holidaymakers to travel with just one bag, typically one that sits inside the overhead bin.

Not only does the technique save money, because it avoids paying for a checked bag, but it also takes the stress out of travelling.

The travel experts at AFAR, an online travel magazine, have called this the One Bag rule, which encourages holidaymakers to adopt a minimalist approach when it comes to packing.

But travelling without tonnes of luggage doesn’t mean you have to leave the essentials behind.

In recent years, travel experts have shared their top tricks when it comes to maximising luggage space.

One item holidaymakers have been raving about are carabiner clips, which are typically used by hikers and climbers.

But it turns out the nifty items can be used when packing for a holiday.

AFAR magazine wrote: “A carabiner clipped to the outside of your bag can be useful; it can hold an extra pair of shoes, a water bottle, a hat, or a jacket.”

If you are using carabiner clips on the side of your cabin bag, make sure it adheres to the airline’s hand luggage restrictions.

The space-enhancing item has been praised by customers on Amazon, with many items receiving thousands of five-star reviews.

In the reviews, several Amazon users referenced how useful the items were for travelling.

One person wrote: “Really good quality, perfect for attaching to my hand luggage to keep my travel wallet on.”

Another added: “Perfect carabiner for travelling, helps secure items to your person to increase difficulty for somebody to take them.”

Anyone wishing to pack with a carabiner clip can easily buy a ten-pack on Amazon for just £7.99 – working out at less than 79p each.

If you don’t see yourself using a carabiner clip, then you’ll be relieved to know there are plenty of other pocket-friendly packing hacks out there.

Packing cubes

A lot of people nowadays swear by packing cubes to help make packing easier.

The cubes save space in suitcases and prevent people from overpacking, while also making it much easier for them to organise their belongings.

Travel reporter Joey Hadden explained how she has found another practical use for her cubes.

She explained that she also uses her packing cube as a pillow – especially when she’s struggling to get comfortable on long journeys.

She wrote: “I fill the cubes with clothing so I can fit as many outfits as possible into my luggage.

“As I tried to get comfortable in a reclining chair on an overnight train, I had an epiphany: What if I pull the packing cube out of my backpack to rest my head on?”

An eight piece collection of the cubes can be bought on Amazon from £9.99, or £1.25 per cube.

Meanwhile, this mum revealed a “genius” packing hack before she went on holiday.

Meanwhile, this travel pro showed how to fit a week’s worth of clothing into hand luggage.

And Sun Online Travel’s resident flight attendant explained why cabin crew aren’t necessarily bothered by Tiktok packing hacks.
