He almost fell over as he approached the baseline, prompting the match to be paused for a medical time-out whilst he recovered.

Murray could be seen coming over to check on his opponent, who appeared shaken after the incident.

Speaking on commentary, former British tennis player Annabel Croft said: “Very worrying scenes. Honestly I’ve never seen somebody look as if they were about to keel over.

“You wondered what was going on, I thought he was going to faint.

“He did well to steady himself and not crash to the surface, where he may have done some damage to his body or his head.

“It came over him so quickly. We’ve talked about the conditions, Laura [Robson] told us it hadn’t been quite as hot as the qualifying, when another player nearly fainted, but it can suddenly happen.”

Temperatures reached around 26 degrees Celsius during the match.

The incident comes after Arthur Cazaux was forced to retire from his first round match earlier this week after fainting.

After receiving medical attention and having his blood pressure taken, Berrettini was deemed able to continue.

However, he went on to lose as Murray came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The 36-year-old even had a message for his fans afterwards, as he wrote: “Life in the old dog yet!” and a smiley face on a courtside camera.

Murray has dropped several hints so far this year that he could retire from tennis.

He has a busy schedule in Miami this week, though, after setting up a second round clash with Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Friday.

Before that, he kicks off his men’s doubles campaign alongside partner Sebastian Korda.
