Taylor Swift breaks silence with political post during her Eras Tour

Taylor Swift has broken her silence about the upcoming US election on social media.

The superstar, 34, took to her Instagram story to share a handwritten message urging her 282 million followers to vote in the Presidential Primary.

“Today, March 5, is the presidential primary in Tennessee and 16 other states and territories,” Swift began her statement.

“I wanted to remind you guys to vote the people who most represent YOU into power. If you haven’t already, make a plan to vote today.”

“Whether you’re in Tennessee or somewhere else in the US, check your polling place and times at,” she finished then tagging the vote.org link for her followers to visit.

The Cruel Summer singer’s post comes after she has become increasingly vocal about politics on social media following the 2016 US election outcome.

In 2018, Swift broke her political silence to speak out against Tennessee Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn for the midterm elections.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” she wrote to Instagram.

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” she continued.

“I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin colour, gender or who they love.”

Then in 2019, Swift created a petition in support of the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ rights which she promoted at the end of her You Need To Calm Down music video.

In her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana, Swift gave fans a rare insight into why she decided to engage in politics and speak out against Blackburn.

In the film, the singer discussed how the backlash the Dixie Chicks faced after their comments on President George W Bush became a cautionary tale and “terrified” her.

“I registered it – that you’re always one comment away from being done being able to make music,” she explained.

In one scene, Swift expressed regret while speaking to her father Scott Swift and her management team about not speaking out for the 2016 election.

“I need to be on the right side of history,” she told her father about her decision to speak out about the 2018 midterm elections after he expressed concern for her safety.

In the 2020 election, Swift publicly endorsed Joe Biden for president and confirmed her political position in an interview with V Magazine.
