Supermarket chain with 500 stores to abruptly shut shop doors in days – is your local going?

A MAJOR supermarket chain with 500 stores is pulling the plug on one of its stores within days.

Morrisons’ branch in Breightmet, Bolton will be closing down on Sunday, September 17.

The supermarket giant confirmed the store would be closing in July but the exact date has only just been revealed.

Morrisons previously confirmed that its store in Faversham would be closing that same day too.

Plus, its store on Blackpool Road, Preston is shutting down, though the exact date hasn’t been released.

In July, a spokesperson for Morrisons, said: “Following a thorough review of our Faversham and Bolton Breightmetstore’s operation, unfortunately we do not believe performance is sustainable and we are therefore announcing today that we have made the difficult decision to sell the stores.”

Morrisons isn’t the only retailer shutting branches on Sunday, September 17.

Decathlon is closing one of its shops this weekend, just two years after it first opened its doors.

The sporting goods retailer revealed it is closing its branch in Bromley High Street, in Greater London, on September 17 in an email to customers.

Collapsed company Wilko is also shutting 38 outlets this Sunday.

The Sun exclusively revealed that Wilko administrators have agreed the sale of the retailer’s brand name to The Range in a £5million deal.

While the website and brand will live on, all shops will still close for good.

Stores shutting down on Sunday include Accrington, Bradford, Coalville, Newport, Shirely and Worcester.

The high street has been hit hard in recent years due to the growth of online shopping, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the same time the cost of living has been rising, leading to shoppers cutting back on non-essential spending.

Brick and mortar stores have also seen a lack of footfall due to consumer habits switching to online shopping.
