But the visitors drew level less than a minute after the restart – and the Dutchman missed it.
The teams were just 50 seconds into the second period when Timo Werner picked out Rodrigo Bentancur, who strode unchallenged into the box and fired home.
Just moments later Sky Sports’ cameras panned to United’s manager on the touchline.
And he looked in complete shock after making a late entrance from the dressing-room.
Fans appeared to love the fact that he had missed the goal as they took to social media to poke fun at the Dutchman.
One wrote: “Lol Ten Hag missed Tottenham’s equalising goal as he was walking back from the dressing room.
Another said: “Erik Ten Hag hadn’t even had time to sit in his seat before Tottenham equalised.
“His team switch off time and time again.”

As a third added, along with a laughing emoji: “Erik Ten Hag hadn’t even taken his seat when Rodrigo Bentancur stunned Man Utd with an equaliser.”
Rasmus Hojlund had given United the lead early on before Richarlison rose highest to head home an equaliser from a corner.
However, Marcus Rashford fired United back into the lead moments before the break – but the lead did not last long.
The action unfolded in front of new chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who was sat alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford stands following his purchase of a 25 per cent stake in the club.
And United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney, who was sacked by Birmingham City a fortnight ago, was with his wife Coleen and their four children at the game.
