Strep A antibiotics in short supply, warn pharmacists as death toll in children hits 16

ANTIBIOTIC supplies for Strep A are going from bad to worse, warn pharmacists, while a probe has been launched into rocketing prices.

Thousands of children have been infected with Strep A since September, with 16 deaths.

Dr Leyla Hannbeck, of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, said stocks of antibiotics are “poor”.

She added: “People are having to go from one pharmacy to another.

“It’s chaos.”

The Competition and Markets Authority is investigating after some suppliers upped the cost from £2 per pack to £11.

Public Health Wales is also looking into the death of Jacob McNeill, four, from Powys who may be the 17th victim.

The Department of Health said manufacturers “have supplies”.
