Nunez, meanwhile, has taken time to adjust to life at Liverpool since his £85million move from Benfica, albeit with flashes of brilliance.

After the Uruguayan was likened to Cole by a fan on social media, the 51-year-old took issue.

He tweeted: ” Cole .., Nunez… not sure we’re (sic) this nonsense started !!!

“But it’s Christmas the festival season… I am happily retired….

“Five PL (titles), 2 FA cups . 1 league cup. 1 champion league.. gold boot YPOTY. 187 premier league goals . 1 pen. Life is what you make it .”

The fan was at pains to stress that he had meant no disrespect to Cole, and that he was merely trying to back Nunez.

But Cole was having none of it.

He added: “Sorry Dave worded wrongly or rightly….

“People need to stop disrespecting my name… because I don’t play the game , just a quiet guy getting on with life people think they can disrespect me ….

“Look at the numbers and compare them to anyone else …”

Cole’s tally of 187 Prem goals puts him fourth on the all-time list – only behind Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane.

He won five Premier League titles with Man United, while playing an integral role in their treble winning side in 1999.

Nunez, meanwhile, has missed a number of key chances for the Reds this term.

After a series of blunders in Thursday’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester City, Nunez was derided by many fans.

His time at Liverpool hasn’t been all bad, however, managing nine goals and three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions for his new club.

The Reds return to Prem action tomorrow, when they travel to Aston Villa.
