Split-second Oscars clip appears to show Emma Stone badmouthing host Jimmy Kimmel

The internet is convinced they saw Emma Stone call Jimmy Kimmel a “prick” in a split-second clip from the 2024 Oscars.

Stone, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress yesterday, seemed to mouth the word after the Oscars host took aim at her latest flick, Poor Things.

Scenes from each of the films nominated for Best Picture played for the A-list crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, including some from Poor Things.

After the highlight reel from the film played, Kimmel quipped: ”Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.”

It seemed to be a dig at the film’s many racy scenes, which earned it an R-rating in the US and MA15+ rating in Australia.

The camera then cut to the film’s cast and crew, catching a split-second moment where Stone said something to her husband, Dave McCary, who was sitting beside her.

A flood of social media users claimed the actress appeared to mouth “he’s a prick” in the short clip.

“Emma Stone being annoyed by Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about Poor Things and calling him a ‘prick’ on international TV – she’s doing the lord’s work,” one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote.

Another said: “Emma Stone has never been more attractive than saying ‘he’s such a prick’ about Jimmy Kimmel.”

Others were skeptical, claiming Stone could have said any number of things and it’s impossible to know without clear sound from the moment.

Some claimed it looked like she was saying “he’s right” in response to Kimmel’s joke, others insisted there was no point speculating.

“Don’t try and lip read when you don’t even have a full clip of what she said,” one said.

Stone’s supposed ‘badmouthing’ moment couldn’t overshadow her mammoth win on Monday (Sunday in the US), taking home her second Best Actress Oscar.

She won this time for her performance in Poor Things and previously took the gong home in 2017 for her role in La La Land.

But there was a spot of trouble when she took to the Oscars stage to accept her award and revealed her dress had burst open.

“Oh boy, my dress is broken,” she said. “I think it happened during I’m Just Ken.”

She went on to thank the crew and cast of Poor Things, her fellow nominees, her family and husband. Stone then gave a special shout-out to her daughter.

“Most importantly my daughter, who is going to be three in three days and has turned our lives technicolour,” she said.

“I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl. So, thank you so much.”
