Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello relationship timeline: How they met, split and everything to know

After seven years of marriage, one of Hollywood’s most loved couples Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello are getting divorced.

The couple shared the devastating news this morning via Page Six

”We have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the joint statement read.

“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

The news comes after fans spotted Vergara not wearing her wedding ring as she celebrated her 51st birthday in Italy earlier this year without her husband.

Vergara, 51, and Manganiello, 46, first met in 2014 and have shared their love with fans on social media throughout the years.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look back at the couple’s love story. 

May 3, 2014: The couple first met at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in 2014.

Vergara and Manganiello were introduced by their mutual friend, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who co-starred with Vergara on the sitcom Modern Family.

At the time, Vergara was engaged to Nick Loeb.

May 23: Just weeks after the dinner, the Hot Pursuit actress shared a note screenshot to her Who Say account announcing that she had split from her fiancé.

During a 2015 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Ferguson said that it didn’t take long after the split for Manganiello to ask his friend for Vergara’s number.

”When she broke up with her fiancé at the time, Joe – like, immediately, the moment it was out in the world – called me and was, like: ‘I need her number.’ And then I called Sofia and I was, like, ‘Can I give Joe your number?’ And she was, like, ‘Ay, no!’ … but like, wanting me to give the number: ‘Oh no, you go ahead, okay, okay.’ And so I did the number exchange and he took over from there.”

June 14, 2014 – After getting in touch, the pair went on their first date together.

The Magic Mike star flew from Los Angeles to New Orleans where Vergara was filming her latest flick, Hot Pursuit. 

Manganiello told Haute Living in 2015 that Vergara gave “every reason why it would never work out” between them.

“Like, ‘You’re too young, you’re an actor, you’re this, you’re that,’ and she was just doing it to hear herself say it,” he said. “She was trying to talk herself out of going there.”

July 10, 2014: Manganiello and Vergara made their social media debut.

Vergara’s niece posted a photo of the group, including Manganiello, out for dinner at Nobu Malibu, celebrating Vergara’s 42nd birthday.

In the pic, the Modern Family actress had her arm slung over her boyfriend’s shoulder as he pulled her close to him.

August 11, 2014: It’s official! The pair went public with their love in August after a whirlwind couple of months of dating.

“You know I’m just having a great time and it’s a special time in my life and I’m trying not to think too much about it,” the actress told EXTRA. “It’s something very new so we will see what happens.”

December 24, 2014: Just six months after their first date, Vergara and Manganiello announced they were engaged.

Manganiello popped the question while the pair were on Christmas vacation in Hawaii at the St. Regis Hotel.

The Sabotage actor later recalled the special moment to Haute Living in 2015.

“Our first date was in June, and then I proposed to her on Christmas Eve; [we dated for] about six months. When you know, you know, and we knew right away — like, very quickly,” he said.

“We had this big bay window [that I opened up], and the sun was going down pink over the mountains and over the bay, and I had this ring. I had looked at every ring in the world, and this is the ring that I wanted. I had a whole speech prepared in Spanish. I proposed to her on one knee in Spanish with the sun going down. It was awesome.”

May 4, 2015: The lovebirds took another huge step as they announce they’re moving in together.

Vergara spilled the news on the Ellen DeGeneres show, where she told the titular host that they were moving that very day.

“Today! We’re doing the move, and it’s been crazy, but I wanted to come, ya know, and see you,” Vergara said. “I left him unpacking my things.”

“He has a lot of books that I don’t know where I’m gonna put,” she added. “He reads everything. It’s like a lot of books, new books. But they’re driving me crazy because I’m looking for a place to put them.”

November 22, 2015: Vergara and Manganiello said ‘I Do’!

The loved-up couple got married at Breakers Resorts in Palm Beach, Florida.

The casts of Modern Family and True Blood were reportedly in attendance.

The next day, Vergara posted a picture of the couple at the altar during the ceremony, holding hands under an elaborate flower hanging. 

December 1, 2015: Vergara shared a snap from the newlyweds honeymoon at Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos.

The actress captioned the pic of her and her husband: “We will never forget this place.”

January 30, 2016: The married couple attend their first awards show together.

Manganiello attended the SAG Awards with Vergara.

The Wild Card actress was nominated with her Modern Family cast for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.

April, 2018: Manganiello told Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show on April 14 that he “knew right away” Vergara was the one for him on their first date.

In the same month, Manganiello told Cigar Aficionado magazine that Vergara was “it for [him]”.

“Coming to grips with the idea that someone who is not related to you could possibly love you that much

“People say things like, ‘Marriage and relationships are work.’ But it’s not. Life is hard. Having somebody to help you deal with it is the greatest thing that ever happened,” he said.

June 14, 2021: The pair celebrated seven years since their first date.

“Feliz first date anniversary,” Vergara captioned a cute snap of the pair out at dinner.

July 11, 2022: Manganiello celebrated his wife’s 50th birthday with a sweet Instagram tribute.

“¡Feliz Cumpleaños mi amor! I love you so much,” he wrote.

The couple also celebrated with Vergara’s loved ones at the Sunset Tower Hotel.

February 15, 2023: The couple celebrated another Valentine’s Day together.

June 30, 2023: Vergara seemed to be reminiscing on her relationship as she posted a throwback photo of herself and Manganiello on vacation in Italy.
