An official Sky memo warns all users to be on high alert for the dangerous emails.

A simple mistake could lead to you being hacked, defrauded, extorted, and leave you with empty bank accounts.

“Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies,” Sky explained.

“In order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

“Phishing emails can differ, but be careful of unsolicited or unexpected emails.”

There are many warning signs that can indicate an email is trying to phish you.

For instance, they might ask you to send across personal or financial info.

Often this will come with a warning like:

Your account is going to be shut downYou need to reset a passwordA payment has failedYou’re due a refund

These should be treated with extreme caution.

You may also be asked to follow a link to keep using your password – or it’ll expire.

Another scam involves asking you to download security updates, which ultimately infect your device.

You might be tempted with offers that seem too good to be true.

And strange writing is always a warning sign: look for bad grammar or spelling, as well as generic greetings.

There are several ways to protect yourself from these dangerous emails, Sky warned.

“Avoid using links or phone numbers in the email if you’re unsure,” Sky advised.

“Go directly to our website to sign in or contact us using contact details from trusted sources, ie your bill or contract, instead.

“If you suspect it’s a phishing email, mark it as Spam so your mailbox can try to catch any emails like that in the future.”

Sky also said that it’s important that you don’t tick the Keep Me Signed In option or Remember My Password on shared computers.

And always sign out when you’re finished.
