Severe weather along I-95 corridor in Northeast, mid-Atlantic could bring wild start to workweek

It could be a wild start to the workweek for millions of people living along the Interstate 95 corridor from the Northeast to the mid-Atlantic as a cold front sweeps through the region and brings the risk of severe weather Monday and Tuesday.

The threat of severe storms on Monday stretches from New England through the Southeast. However, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area from New York City, Philadelphia and Washington into South Carolina for a level 2 out of 5 on its thunderstorm risk category scale.

Within that zone, a level 3 out of 5 is highlighted from eastern Virginia into north-central North Carolina.

Be sure to download the free FOX Weather app and allow notifications to be alerted to any severe weather warnings should they be issued in your area.

Severe thunderstorms that develop on Monday will be capable of producing some tornadoes.

Tornadoes will be possible from Delaware and southern Maryland through Virginia and into central North Carolina.

Cities at risk of seeing possible tornadoes on Monday include Washington, Salisbury in Maryland, Richmond in Virginia and Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham and Winston-Salem in North Carolina.

HOW YOU SHOULD PREPARE FOR A TORNADO

Tornadoes aren’t the only hazard that Monday’s severe thunderstorms could produce, however.

Damaging wind gusts higher than 60 mph are possible across the region, with the highest risk being found from parts of eastern Virginia into north-central North Carolina.

Large hail, too, is also a possibility.

The risk for hail larger than 2 inches will be found across western and central portions of Virginia and North Carolina.

The severe weather threat will stretch into Tuesday. However, the risk won’t be as high as it is Monday.

The threat of severe thunderstorms will stretch from portions of western Connecticut and southeastern New York, including the New York City tri-state area, south along the I-95 corridor through Philadelphia and along the East Coast in Virginia and the Carolinas.
