According to YouTube star Scotty Kilmer, an expert mechanic who’s been fixing cars for 56 years, an automatic transmission problem is simply not worth the expense to fix.
He reveals that if the motor makes a “clunk” while it’s going through the gears, you should get rid of your set of wheels as soon as possible – or risk it breaking down.
In a recent video, where he’s standing alongside a large 4×4, he said: “Today I’m going to tell you when it’s a good time to get rid of a used car.
“Now this one has a perfectly smooth running engine but the transmission occasionally gives a big clunk when it shifts.
“Now it wouldn’t do it for me in a half-hour drive so now is the time to get rid of it because fixing a 4×4 with an automatic can be a huge expense, so if you’re going to sell a used car, sell it before it breaks down entirely.
“But just make sure you let them know what they’re getting into.”
According to the Express, the issue will likely be coupled with a dashboard warning light; specifically the automatic transmission warning light or gearbox warning light.
Transmission problems can be a really costly issue for your motor.
We reported previously that an average gearbox repair job can cost between £270 and £411, while a full replacement would likely set you back over £500.
It can also affect other systems in the car, which could keep repair bills heading skywards.
Scotty has spoken in length about transmission problems in the past, claiming that ignoring any issues with this key area of the car can lead not only to expensive repairs, but also breakdowns.
This comes as another expert mechanic, Car SOS star Fuzz Townshend, revealed a simple tip to classic car owners that they should look into before purchasing their dream motor.
